Xylitol is Dangerous to Dogs

I posted this on my Facebook profile, but not everyone here has the FB.

All dog owners, please read this.

A week ago, I was in the Vet picking up medicine, and I saw a posting on the wall regarding Xylitol.

Xylitol is a sweetener that's used in sugar-free gums, baking products, etc. While Xylitol is safe for people, it is HORRIBLY DANGEROUS to dogs.

Unfortunately, tonight, Macee (our Bichon Frise) ate almost a full pack of Orbit Wintermint - 13 sticks. After calling the local emergency vets (which is 25 min away), they told me to call the ASPCA Pet Poison Control Line (1-888-).

From their directions, we were told to induce vomiting with Hydrogen Peroxide. She vomited, but we only saw 1-2 sticks of gum.

So, right now, Macee is at the emergency vet in Frederick. She was behaving fine, but I'll get her at 7am, and bring her to our vet. They'll be running constant tests and a dextrose drip throughout the night. Low blood sugar is a risk, but so is liver damage/failure.

There are links all over:

Xylitol can be deadly, please spread the word.

Macee is home now, she was in our local vet's office all day on an IV.

She threw up a few times today, as well as one time at home. Right now she's sleeping. She seemed to be feeling ok, alert when I took her out for a walk - that got her tail wagging, but I can't feed her much as it just comes back up.

Hopefully all is well.

Downside is, We've spent over $900 so far on this, all because of a $1 pack of gum.
